The journey to becoming a New Warrior begins with an extraordinary weekend initiation training called The New Warrior Training Adventure. The New Warrior Training Adventure (NWTA) is a process of initiation and self-examination that is crucial to the development of a healthy and mature male self. It is the "Hero's Journey" of classical literature and myth - the process of moving away from the comforting embrace of the mother's feminine energy and safely into the masculine kingdom. It is a journey of the soul during which men confront their dependencies, their mistrust of others and their need to be special. The NWTA is a time and place where men begin, or continue in a deeper way, their conscious journey of discovering how to live lives of integrity, mission, accountability and connection to feelings. During this weekend, men are challenged in deeply personal ways to look at who they are and how they make life choices that work and don’t work for them. "The only devils in the world are those running around in our own hearts. That is where the battle must be fought." -- Mahatma Gandhi A key truth of the New Warrior Training Adventure is that you direct your own training through the responses and decisions you make along your journey. The staff members serve as your guides and mentors, but you choose your own level of commitment. You, and only you, determine the depth to which you will explore the inner terrain of your life to discover the treasures, and obstacles buried within your self. The training begins on a Friday afternoon and finishes on Sunday. The Kentucky New Warrior Trainings take place in a scenic and secluded area of Southern Indiana. The training site offers men a chance to do their work in a safe and spiritual setting. New Warrior Training Adventure Weekends are also offered in other locations throughout the United States and Internationally Back to Top Who Runs the Training? The ManKind Project, an international not-for-profit corporation, has over 31 certified training centers throughout the world. From this worldwide source, each center draws highly motivated, experienced, certified leaders to facilitate and coordinate its training programs. In turn, the leaders assemble an extremely well trained volunteer staff of men who have a passion for giving themselves to assist other men on their journeys. Because all of the men who lead or staff the weekend training have experienced the NWTA initiation process, each man has a compelling sense of the value and power of male initiation and authentic self-examination. Back to Top When Are The Training Dates? The training dates vary with each year. The schedule for the Kentucky Center for the current calendar year is as follows:
Who Comes to the Training? During your training you will stand shoulder to shoulder with an immensely rich mixture of men, with occupations, ages and experiences as diverse as masculinity itself. Whether they're corporate executives or recent high school graduates, all come to share a common understanding that their lives as men can be empowered with greater focus and direction and that this personal initiation into manhood is crucial to their full development as men. "Some people sleep until morning. Others know they have to bring the morning." -- Shlomo Carlbach Back to Top Am I Ready? Only you can decide if you are ready to participate in the New Warrior Training Adventure. We do not recommend this training for every man. We urge you not to apply to this program without serious forethought, and not to enroll simply at the urging of a spouse or friend. To participate in this training, you must be willing to face the prospect of transformative change in your life and be in reasonably good physical condition. You must be highly committed to your life, and ready to participate fully in training activities that encourage you to take a hard look at yourself, your deepest fears, your wounds from the past, and the specific ways in which your life is working and not working for you. We choose to work only with men who are ready and willing to do this initiatory work with us. "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate; our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.... As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." -- Marianne Williamson from A Return to Love Back to Top How Do I Register? Because training sessions are booked far in advance and discounts are offered for early registration, we highly encourage you to register now for the weekend of your choice. Fill out and submit the registration form on the registration page. Someone will contact you soon. . Back to Top What Happens After the Training? Approximate one week after you have completed your initiation weekend you are honored by your fellow Warriors, family and friends at a graduation ceremony. The weekend and graduation are followed by the opportunity to join ongoing, supportive "integration groups" (I-Groups) formed from the weekend participants. Experienced and skilled Warriors facilitate these groups. I-Groups provide initiated men the opportunity to deepen and further integrate the life changes that began during the NWTA weekend. I-Groups also provide an opportunity for ongoing support and connection with other Warriors. In addition to I-Groups, there are numerous other trainings and workshops offered throughout the year to further assist initiated men to continue their journey toward mature masculinity. Back to Top Does This Work Make a Real Difference? Quite simply, the men involved with The ManKind Project are changing the world one man at a time. The effects on the individual man are powerful and life changing. However, the growth and healing that men experience doesn't stop with the individual man. Like a stone tossed into a still pool of water, The ManKind Project programs send ripples into the far-reaching corners of the planet beginning with the man, his family, circle of friends and acquaintances. But it reaches farther still: New Warrior men and Centers are involved in mentoring disaffected youth, working with gangs and incarcerated young men, building shelters for the homeless, creating programs for veterans, and other causes that cry out for healthy masculine presence. "I know lots of men who have done lots of personal growth work, and not until they went through the NWTA program did I see observable changes in their career effectiveness, commitment to home life and better partnership with their spouses" (A comment from an anonymous observant woman quoted by Bill Kauth, MKP founder, in his Annual Letter) Back to Top What Will I Get Out of This? Here is what just a few people have to say about the NWTA experience. "My men's work was a god-send and a blessing. It saved my life. It has given me a transformation that allows me to continue life's journey at a new spiritual level."--Henry Thurman, Kenosha, Wisconsin "I remember the fear, isolation and anger that I saw in my partner's eyes when he left our house for his weekend. I also remember the look of grim determination I saw on his face. He said he wanted to change his life because whatever he had been doing was not working. I sat with my fear all weekend. A joyous man returned to our house Sunday evening. His eyes were bright and clear. His inner peace and excitement for life were visible. He had a gentleness in his spirit that he had revealed before only occasionally and guardedly. I was witnessing a transformation I could not have imagined? And, that was just the beginning."--Carmen Stalling Finn, Houston, Texas "Previous cultures throughout history always intended authentic masculine initiation. But their vision and their cultural context of the world were necessarily limited. Since the first earthrise photograph from outer space, we have entered a new mythological era. For the first time in human history, we have before us the possibility of authentic masculine initiation - an initiation into the global brotherhood." --Dr. Robert Moore Coauthor of King, Warrior, Magician, Lover "The New Warrior Training Adventure changed my life. So has being part of The ManKind Project community. I have discovered how to be an Elder in this community, not a senior citizen, not an old person, not one of the elderly, but as a true and wise Elder. I now know what the next and last phase of my life is about and I am eager to take it on. I don't intend to be put out to pasture, or be warehoused in a nursing home. I intend to stay engaged with the world as an Elder, sharing my wisdom and blessing with younger men and women who want to be seen and heard. Not only that, I intend to call out to other Elders to join me, as I have come to see just how powerful a role we have. It is good for us and good for everyone else. I have a mission for the last quarter of my life, which is "I co-create a world of harmony by seeing and blessing people for who they truly are.'" -- Alan Gilburg, Bethesda, Maryland "New Warrior Training is an authentic initiation into the cauldron of mature masculinity. I recommend it highly to deeply committed men. The NW staff men are loving, generous, and deep-intentioned men who will evoke the very best within you." -- Forrest Craver Convener of the North American Confederation of Men's Councils "By doing this training, I finally came to terms with my own father, as I was able to forgive him for the marvelously imperfect job that he did. And I can now forgive myself when I am an imperfect dad. The men in my community help me to remember that the most important part of being a good dad is simply to love my sons and to love their mother." -- Dennis Mead-Shikaly, San Diego, California "In 1983, I wrote The Secrets that Men Keep. After experiencing the New Warrior Training I'm rewriting that book. It's the most important men's work occurring in the U.S., and perhaps in the world, today." -- Dr. Ken Druck Psychologist, Consultant, Author "I did my training in February 1996 in London. It was the most terrifying experience of my life and at the same time probably the most meaningful experience. I have come to learn that initiatory experience has both elements - Terror and Bliss. I have lived most of my life in the nice guy persona, and this nice guy would do everything for anyone just to be loved, complimented, and admired. The down side to this was being unable to express my anger and rage, which in my experience led me into the role of victim. I dared not express anger just in case I ended up not being loved. What I realized that weekend was that I could express my anger and still be loved; that others could express their anger to me and I could still love them. So what I really got out of my weekend was to really know what it means to access warrior energy, to state clear boundaries around me, to express my anger without fear of being rejected or abandoned, and to draw my "sword" to heal rather than hurt." -- Michael Fisher, London, England "The truth is I was afraid of this training. Even though I've written about men and worked with men for many years, the fact is -- as I discovered on the Weekend -- I didn't really trust men. I'm glad I overcame my fear. This was the most powerful training I've ever done, and the changes it started in me have been both deep and positive." -- Mark Gerzon Author of A Choice of Heroes "The ManKind Project and NWTA enriches my spiritual life more than any other community I participate in. These men who were on the weekend with me, and who attend weekly I-groups with me, are men I can trust, hold to their word, and men who allow me to be me without judgment or shame. Doing the work, works. I've never been anywhere where brutal honesty was met with such open arms until I joined the ManKind Project. It has been years since I have participated in a spiritual group of any kind. Being a non-religious person, I was skeptical at first of the quasi-spiritual language used at the Open House meeting. In hindsight now, I realize that my fears about the weekend and about the Mankind Project were just my personal judgments and projections, and not really true. Ultimately, this community for me is one of integrity. Finally, I've found an organization that is formed together based solely on people being the truest they can be to themselves and to others. How refreshing! How rewarding! How Liberating!" -- John Ferguson, Lexington, Kentucky "The work we do in the NWTA and The ManKind Project has helped to calm my inner critic who in the past often told me that I wasn't good enough and didn't measure up and that other people didn't measure up either. My experience in The ManKind Project has helped me to look at my core beliefs and as a result has opened my heart and mind and put me on a path of awakening, of love, and of being less judgmental. In addition, I now have more of a sense of belonging and can trust that I am not deficient and am truly loved for who I am." -- Bob Oser, Louisville Kentucky Back to Top |
